Waterskiing - Tour description

waterskiing in bentota

Beginners
Learning waterskiing the “proper way” is a combination of learning the theory behind the sport coupled with the technical knowledge and of course the practical experience. Theoretical instruction is given on land by your water ski instructor. You will also be provided with DVD’s and literature that will provide you with a good background knowledge about water skiing and prepare you for what to expect on the water. Technical Training involves learning about ski equipment. That means choosing the correct ski, use of safety equipment and learning about the boat and boat speed. Practice and more practice is what you need to become a great water skier. You have to condition your body with time on the water as water skiing is an extreme sport and it takes time, patience and fitness to master the sport.

In our ski programme we will indicate the milestones for beginners so you will know what to expect along the way. Every person who learns to water ski progresses at a different pace therefore, some of you will take longer to achieve the milestones than others. But perseverance and practice always pays off.

The beginners’ course can be either 7 or 10 day course. We recommend the 10 day course as you will need time to recover from the muscle fatigue you will encounter as you reach and pass each milestone.

Milestones
Day 1 – you will learn to stand up on combo skis (two skis) and be able to make a circuit of the river.
Day 2 and 3- you will learn to slalom on combo skis
Day 4 – you will learn to drop a ski and balance on one ski
Day 5 – you will learn to water start and mono ski behind the boat
Day 6 and 7 – you will learn to slalom on one ski

For beginners we have the equipment for you to reach you milestones. We have the combo skis, mono skis, gloves and vests.

Intermediate
For intermediate skiers our programme teaches you body position, ski technique and style. The practice will improve your physical conditioning and build endurance in order to reach the next level.

The intermediate skier will learn to slalom while free skiing (without buoys) in order to perfect your skiing technique before progressing to skiing with buoys. Speed and timing are critical when learning to run the 6 buoy slalom course and this training is all part of our intermediate ski programme.

Learning to start with one leg in the ski and one leg out of the ski is a prelude to the Beach Start, which is also something new you can learn at this level, as by this time your body has the strength and control to manage this without difficulty.

Advanced
Advanced skiers will receive training in style in order to improve your performance on the 6 buoy slalom course. Once style is perfected you can practice on the buoys with decreasing rope lengths and increasing boat speeds.

The advanced skier can also learn to Pier Start and to ski barefoot. These are fun tricks you can impress your friends with.

Advanced skiers should bring your own skis as you will be most comfortable on them and make good progress quickly.

Achievement
As you reach and overcome each milestone, you will feel an incredible sense of achievement. To be able to walk on water is the most incredible feeling. To progress from stage to stage it takes a great deal of mental and physical discipline. Both your mind and body are pushed to an entirely new level as each new challenge becomes more difficult than the one before.
