kitesurfing is awesome

ON THE WEST COAST

Whale, Dolphin and Dugong Watching
Kalpitiya is located at the mouth of the Puttalam Lagoon, beyond which is the Gulf of Mannar where you can observe whales and dolphins, as they pass by to their mating grounds.

Within the lagoon, there are several largish islands that can be visited by boat. In the shallow waters around these islands and elsewhere in the gulf lives the dugong, the mysterious and elusive marine mammal that is believed to have spawned the legend of the mermaid. The largest specimens are supposed to come from the Kalpitiya area, for as James Emerson Tennent remarks in Ceylon (1859): One of the most remarkable animals on the coast is the plant eating dugong, numbers of which are attracted to the inlets, from the bay of Calpentyn (Kalpitiya) to Adam’s Bridge, by the still water and the abundance of marine algae in these parts of the gulf. One, which was killed in Mannar and sent to me in Colombo in 1847, measured upwards of seven feet in length, but specimens considerably larger have been taken at Calpentyn.

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling
The largest coral reef in Sri Lanka “Bar Reef” is only an hour by boat from Kalpitiya.  This beautiful reef is home to an incredible variety of tropical fish, manta rays, reef sharks and the occasional turtle.

ON THE SOUTH COAST

Canoeing
Canoeing on the Bentota River is great fun as you can paddle up and down the tributaries.  The scenery along the bank of the river is spectacular as you will pass tropical forests filled with plants and flowers.  The exotic flora is only second to the wonderful variety of birds and reptiles you will see.  The Bentota River is dotted with islands and swampy marshlands through which you have to navigate very carefully in order to not disturbing the marsh dwelling reptiles like water monitors and crocodiles.  Sometimes if you are lucky you will see elephants, deer, wild board stopping or wild buffalo that have stopped for a drink.

Wakeboarding
Wakeboarding is truly one of the most fun watersports and its great for all age groups. With a little practice, you can do some incredible stunts and impress all your friends.  The Bentota River provides the ideal location for wakeboarding.   Great water surface and warm waters will allow you to wakeboard all day long, all year round.

Sri lanka has recently
been discovered as an
ideal kitesurfing destination
with its solid trade winds,
warm waters and wide sandy
beaches. The best time for kite-
surfing is from May to October and
from December to March. During the
summer months, the strong southwest
monsoon winds are blowing and produce
a good wind swell along the west coast and
wind stability is extremely high. In the winter
months the sea clears up, gets calmer and the winds become lighter as they blow from the northeast.
