General Information
Sri Lanka is a tropical island lying below the southern-most tip of India surrounded by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. As it lies just North of the equator, Sri Lanka enjoys a warm tropical climate with seasonal variations cause only by the bi-annual monsoon rains. The temperature in Sri Lanka is high and fairly constant due to its position just above the equator.
The population is approximately 19 million comprising Sinhalese – 72%, Tamils – 19%, Muslims – 8% and Burghers (descendants of Dutch and Portuguese) – 1%
A truly multi-ethnic population!
The four major religions practiced in Sri Lanka are Buddhism – followed by 69% of the population, Hinduism – followed by 13% of the population, Islam – followed by 8% of the population and Christianity – followed by 7% of the population.
The most commonly spoken languages in Sri Lanka are Sinhala, Tamil and English.
